Progress Update 25/01/15

On Friday, we re-filmed some scenes and shots during the lesson and for a while after school. We were able to do this quite easily as our first draft allowed us to see what parts needed to be re-filmed, so we weren't standing around trying to figure out what to do.

Evaluation Q4.

HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

Here is a running comentary I made that shows how I used FinalCut Pro and Motion in the making of our music video.

Here's a presentation that I made showing all the other media technologies that we used and how we used them.

If the presentation doesn't work above, then follow this link: evaluation question 4

Evaluation Q3.

For this question I will post screenshots of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (comments) of the feedback I'll receive when we've finished the final product.
I will also post a video of a few people talking about the music video and ancillaries and what they liked/disliked about them and how they thought we could improve using the questions in our media booklet.

Evaluation Q1

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

From my research and planning, I found that its very important to follow the conventions of a music video, especially when shooting a production that falls into a particular genre of music as its important to connect with your implied audience and listen to their needs/what they find entertaining to watch.
When researching the conventions of real music videos I discovered that each music genre generally has different conventions from each other as they are produced to aim towards different target audiences by the artist/s. Therefore as Sam Sparro, the artist of the song 'Black and Gold', is a dance/pop artist, it was important for us to do our research into this particular genre so we can produce a video that will entertain the watchers. From this research, I found that most pop videos were narrative based, so as a group we came up with a story line to keep our audience interested throughout.
Our music video followed the relationship of Sparro and a mysterious girl, who are together at the beginning of the music video but throughout we learn that she isn't really there at all. This is shown in the above screen shots, where the characters are seen gazing at each other, and then in the next shot she disappears into "a bunch of matter" (which links with the lyrics of the song). Pop and dance music videos also usually feature a lot of colour and have quite a lot going on to translate with the high tempo songs, so we filmed the majority of the video in front of a green screen so I could add the special effects in later on in the post-production process.

Another general convention of a music video I found was that it's important for the audience to identify with the main artist and their image/genre, so we filmed many close up shots showing Eoghain and his love interest.

I also found that in quite a lot of music videos, producers liked to put credits at the beginning like a film or program showing the name of their artist and/or the name of the song. Therefore, we decided to do this to emphasize the name of the artist and song.

Evaluation Q2.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

For my ancillary tasks, I chose to create a digipak and website. I felt that it was important to make sure that there is a link between the ancillaries and main media product whether it was through the use of colour schemes, fonts or pictures to create a type of brand identity when it came to creating an image for the artist. This meant that I would be able to create a brand identity for my artist by using the colour schemes and photos to represent Sparro's genre and his style/image.

For example, the two pictures below are a screenshot of the homepage to my website and a picture of a draft of my album cover. As you can see, I've used very similar colour schemes, if not the exact same, to link the two ancillaries together. For my website, I've used a blacked out starry background to reflect the theme of not only the album cover, but the music video also. I also featured a picture of the album cover on the homepage of the website as a form of promotion to sell the digipak to the audience. I also kept the font type and colour the same for both the album cover and website to keep the colour scheme running throughout, and to make the font clearly stand out against the black background.
As we can also see in the pictures above, we've tried to show Sparro's image as clearly as possible to the audience by using close up shots of Eoghain throughout the music video and as the main image on the front of my digipak. This allows Eoghain to become easily identifiable to the audience.

Below is another screenshot from my homepage, which features a snapshot of my digipak album cover and a countdown to the release of the album. Featuring this on the website is a good form of promotion as it gives fans and viewers the accessibility they need to buy the album, all they have to do is click the link.

I felt it was also important to feature the music video on my website as its a good form or promotion and helps receive as many views as possible to generate a buzz around the new single. It also allows viewers of the site to watch Sparro in action and get a better idea of his personal style and genre, whilst also familiarizing themselves with the single.

I also made sure to include images of the female character on the website as she is a main element in the music video, so I wanted to make sure there was a reference to her somewhere on the site where the audience could see images of her and become intrigued to how she was linked to the artist, and then watch the music video.

Website draft 2

Digipak website draft 2

Dolby

webpage has a clear layout and follows the codes and convetions- the colour scheme and styling is consistent with the digipak. Consider how to gain more marks for the use of ICT by integrating other images, sound and video and maybe use a few more tabs to show depth of content.

I like the second digipak from the top- what I would consider is the 'Silverwing productions presents' as this sounds more like a film production company than a record label! The front of the digipak is good but needs a few more details- go over the codes and conventions and look at record label logos and ratings etc.

CD digipak draft 2

I'm not sure what colour scheme/layout I prefer - thoughts?

Album cover draft 2

Here is my second draft of my album front cover. This one is quite different in contrast to the first one as I have used an image of Eoghain and not just the outline of his body, plus I added in a colour scheme to link in with the name of the album I have come up with 'Life Through Technicolour'. However, I feel that the album might come across as quite plain as there isn't much writing and quite a lot of blank spaces around the ages, therefore I might add in some writing such as 'the new album' 'includes the single...' etc.
